Healthy Cooking with Children at Christmas

Healthy Cooking with Children at Christmas

For many of us, staying in continues to be order of the day - so what better place to have some festive fun with kids or grandchildren than the kitchen? We’ve gathered some simple, nourishing Christmas recipes for you to make with your budding foodies (while inspiring a love of healthy eating - bonus!)

For the Little Ones

Ricey the Snowman

This one’s a hit with the Asquith team tiny tots! Quick and easy to put together with even the smallest sous-chefs, these winter-themed snacks are tasty, nourishing and fun.

You’ll need:
  • Organic rice cakes
  • Cream cheese/vegan cream cheese
  • Raisins and dried cranberries
  • Orange pepper or carrot, sliced and cut into small triangles (for the snowmen noses)

While you chop the veggie into little noses, your little kitchen assistant can try their hand at spreading the cream cheese right to the edges of the rice cakes to make them super snowy. Two raisins make coal-like eyes and a curve of cranberries give your snowman a smile. Add the little triangle of carrot or pepper for a nose and ta-da! It’s snack time!

Healthy Sweet Treats

It’s natural to crave sweet things, especially when ads and shops are full of them! Show your small people that sweet needn’t mean refined sugar with these gorgeous chocolate orange energy balls by the wonderful Annie Clarke. Perfect in place of a less nutritious chocolatey orangey confection associated with this time of year.

The Festive Bake

Get baking with Melissa Hemsley’s take on a Christmas classic: gingerbread women that eschew flour in favour of protein-packed ground almonds. They’re orangey and Christmas-spiced and absolutely darling hung on the tree.

For Getting in All the Veggies

How cute are these little veggie Christmas trees from One Handed Cooks? Serve with hummus for extra protein points, too.

Christmas Gifts from the Kids

We think these homemade hot chocolate stirrers are genius! Opt for a high quality, dark choc to keep refined sugar down and be sure to buy fair trade (we love Tony’s Chocolonely). Wrapped and tagged, they make wonderful gifts.

Breakfast Fit for Christmas

This super breakfast bowl from Natural Nourishment is as easy as 1 (stir) 2 (top) 3 (eat!) and a great way to boost those nutrients if the kids need a top up. On the other hand, for a breakfast that feels extra special and indulgent (but is actually seriously good for them) you could serve some healthy apple crumble a la Rhiannon Lambert with a dollop of organic yoghurt. Yummy!

Don’t forget to encourage drinking of plenty of melted snowmen (water!) and keep your bodies moving over the Christmas period. Pop on your softest bamboo activewear and join the children in some yoga – we love Cosmic Kids for family-friendly sessions sure to get your little ones stretching.
