Our founder Alice shares with you why life is better in bamboo…
I first discovered Bamboo fabric when I felt some bamboo towels and bathrobes at a trade show over 10 years ago. I couldn’t believe how soft they were but also how strong and absorbent.
So I decided to start researching bamboo fabric and how I could make it work for Asquiths’ range of Yoga & Pilates clothes. I had to decide on what route to take; leggings or tops. I chose to create a capsule collection of bamboo yoga clothes, tops and pants and test the market.
The results were instant! People loved Asquith’s bamboo yoga clothes… so I decided to make bamboo and organic cotton Asquith’s signature fabrics.
Benefits of bamboo yoga clothes
Bamboo fabric has a natural sheen and softness that feels and drapes like silk but is less expensive and more durable.
Bamboo yoga clothes are easy to launder in a clothes washer and dryer.
Bamboo doesn’t pill, fade, bobble or stretch – perfect for yoga clothing which is constantly in the washing machine!
Because of the smooth and round structure of its fibres, bamboo yoga clothing is softer and stronger and non-irritating, even to sensitive skin.
Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal supposedly because of a bateriostatis agent unique to bamboo plants called “bamboo kun” which also helps resist harbouring odours.
Bamboo clothing is hypoallergenic.
Bamboo is highly absorbent and wicks water away from the body 3 to 4 times faster than cotton. In warm, humid and sweaty weather, bamboo yoga clothing helps keep the wearer drier, cooler and more comfortable and doesn’t stick to the skin.
The structure of bamboo fibres make fabrics stronger, softer and more breathable and thermal regulating than cotton, hemp, wool or synthetic fabrics. Perfect therefore for yoga leggings and hot yoga!
Bamboo clothing is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than cotton, and while it might still require ironing after washing, bamboo fabric can be ironed at a lower temperature than cotton. Shrinkage during washing and drying is minimal at warm temperatures.
Bamboo fibres and fabrics absorb dyes faster and more thoroughly than cotton, modal and viscose therefore they have better colour clarity.
Bamboo fabrics do not need to be mercerized to improve their lustre and dye-ability like cotton.
Why are Bamboo Yoga clothes environmentally friendly?
Bamboo, the plant, and also the fabric rates high as an environmentally friendly and renewable resource because:
Bamboo grows rapidly and naturally without any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers.
Bamboo yoga clothing (both mechanically and chemically manufactured) is 100% biodegradable and can be completely decomposed in the soil by micro-organisms and sunlight without decomposing into any pollutants such as methane gas which is commonly produced as a by-product of decomposition in landfills and dumps.
Growing bamboo improves soil quality and helps rebuild eroded soil. The extensive root system of bamboo holds soil together, prevents soil erosion, and retains water in the watershed.
Bamboo grows naturally without the need for agricultural tending and large diesel exhaust-spewing tractors to plant seeds and cultivate the soil.
Bamboo plantations are large factories for photosynthesis which reduces greenhouse gases. Plants absorb about 5 times the amount of carbon dioxide (a primary greenhouse gas) and produces about 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.
Bamboo fabrics and clothing can be manufactured and produced without any chemical additives although eco-certification such as Oeko-Tex is necessary to insure that the manufacturing and finishing processes are healthy.
Currently, there are no known genetically modified organisms (GMO) variants of bamboo. Let’s hope it stays that way!
Here’s a selection of bamboo yoga clothes from our current Spring/Summer 2019 collection that are perfect for yoga and Pilates but also for life off the mat.
Bamboo Yoga Leggings: Our Smooth You Leggings are perfect if you’re looking for a more dynamic pant for your yoga or Pilates. They’re great for hot yoga because they are super soft but absorb sweat and moisture therefore are great for dynamic movement. They also have a skirt over your bottom which offers great coverage.
Bambor® Leggings: We also offer various styles of leggings which are made from Bambor, our blend of organic cotton and elasthane. Our yoga leggings in Bambor are beautifully opaque, hold you in and offer both softness and strength.
Why do our Bambor leggings work so well?
They’re made from Bambor. A unique fabric that I’ve developed that’s a blend of bamboo, organic Cotton and elasthane and make perfect bamboo yoga leggings.
They’re stronger and softer but won’t bag or stretch at the knees and are great worn with our Freedom Tee.
They feel as if they’re holding you in but they’re so much more comfortable than synthetic leggings…and SO much softer.
You don’t have to just wear it for yoga or the gym. Handy for the barre, your 10,000 steps, or just being active; they’re even perfect for walking the dog!
Bamboo is perfect for softer, drapier yoga pants styles. It feels amazingly soft next to your skin and is so comfy and breathable to wear. We have two styles of Bamboo Harem pants; our bestselling Heavenly Harem Pants and our Long Harem Pants. I first designed the Harem pants for Summer and then introduced the Long Harem Pants for the first time for Autumn/Winter 2016. They were a hit!
The soft gathering at the waistband is flattering for your hips.
Shallow pockets – so you don’t look like you’re hiding squirrels in your pants.
If you are doing yoga and Pilates then the band at the hem keeps the pants in place. And these are great for all different leg lengths. If you’re thinking I’m 5’1” I can never wear jersey pants – you can with these.
You can wear these with heels, with boots, with flip-flops on holiday, around the house.
Our Long Harem Pants are a longer version of our Harem Pants and fast becoming our bestsellers. Versatile enough to wear for yoga, travelling or with trainers or boots for the weekend, these bamboo yoga pants aren’t just for the yoga studio!
Our Freedom Tee is great to wear with our leggings or yoga pants.
Why do our bamboo tops work so well?
All our tops are longer, therefore, no gap between the top and your jeans.
I design them seam detailing down the front or down the back which breaks up your body.
The sleeves cover up bingo wings.
They sit on your hips and blouson out gently so are super flattering.
Our tops come in easy to wear colours that flatter any skin tone.
You can wear them for yoga, over leggings, and in the studio but also with jeans. They’re also great for travelling. On a plane for example. It’s breathable – bamboo helps regulate body temperature. It keeps you warm and keeps you cool.
Another of our bestselling bamboo yoga tops, perfectly paired with our bamboo yoga or Harem pants.
Our Smooth You Tee is great for yoga classes and also for travelling. It sits on your hips and stays in place during practice. It has a soft neckline which flatters neck bones and feels oh so soft against your skin.
