Alice shares her favourite vintage Asquith styles

When we launched our ethical activewear in 2002 we didn't know what to expect. Where would this journey take us and would people even like our clothes? Fast forward to 2019 and we're SO proud to say we have been going for over 17 years. To celebrate, our founder Alice Asquith shares some of her favourite vintage styles from the past few years.

Over to Alice...

One of the things that’s always been most important to me with Asquith, since I launched the label in 2002, is to make the best quality clothes in styles that are comfortable, flatter the wearer and, most importantly, last.

I grew up wearing clothes made by my mother and grandmother where the fabric quality and hand feel was crucial and the cut was key. And I’ve always taken this approach into my label, Asquith.

In order to demonstrate Asquith’s lasting style and quality I had a few pics taken of me in ‘Vintage Asquith’ so you can see how our styles have changed and evolved over the last 17 years with same quality and the fit then as there is today.

Boogie Tee and Flow With It Leggings

I designed the Boogie Tee for AW16. I wanted a roller disco 70s vibe. This semi fitted, ¾ sleeve top is perfect for layering over vests for your yoga and Pilates class or wear with jeans. With a 70s inspired font. I still wear it to Pilates and love it so much that we still run this style… but now it's in bamboo.

The Flow With It Leggings were the first Leopard-print design that we did. I created them with contrast black panels to be super flattering and slimming on the leg. They’re a great ‘camouflage’ pant and I wear them as if they’re a neutral – and I love them paired with this Boogie Tee.

Vest Top and Slouchie Pants

This Vest Top was such a hit when we launched it in 2007. I think the Cobalt blue colour helped. It’s so fresh and vibrant and flatters most skin tones. The top also had a herringbone tie at the back and a contrast blue melange hem. The devil is in the detail!

The Slouchie Pants were also from the same collection in 2007, made in a blue viscose melange fabric and are deliciously slouchy and easy to wear (hence the name!). The foldover at the waist was very fashionable then, and much loved because it covered up tummies. It’s less popular now, hence we don’t offer this style any more.

Wrap Cardigan and Flow With It Leggings

This Wrap cardigan with bell sleeves was from the first ever Asquith collection which launched in 2002. It was made from cotton jersey and had elegant bell shaped cuffs. We shot this collection in celebrity florist Stephen Woodhams garden in February. It was my first shoot, was absolutely freezing and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing! The images and the collection were however a huge success and we had a 1/2 page editorial feature in the Metro, on my Grandmother’s birthday 2nd April, very poignant. She would have been so proud!

And you can also clearly see the Asquith logo as it was then - a row of 7 Swarovski crystals. I wanted a logo that was feminine and not sporty and Swarovski seemed perfect for this. I loved the way it sparkled from a distance. Many customers still get very upset with me for changing it. But the reason I did, wasn’t for cost reasons, as everyone assumes but it was because when Asquith focused on all organic and sustainable fabrics, to me, Swarovski seemed suddenly a little ‘blingy’ and a bit of a contradiction to our organic fabrics, hence the update.

The pants in the photo are our bestselling Camo print Flow With It Leggings from AW18. I still wear mine all the time for yoga and spinning with the Balance Bra Top as they are simply just so comfy.

Bamboo Hoody and Drawstring Pants

This Hoody was my first dip into the water of bamboo clothing. I was so excited when I discovered bamboo fabric. I first discovered bamboo in the form of bathrobes, which Asquith sold online and to luxury hotels and spas, in 2008. It just felt so soft and delicious next to the skin and I loved all the properties that it offered; breathable, moisture wicking to name just a few so I knew it would be a huge hit. I wanted to keep the colour natural and neutral hence this soft putty colour.

The pants were our first Drawstring Pants style – looser fit and wide legged. More a lifestyle item than a yoga pant. With the focus on flattering the wearer and comfort, as always.

Do get in touch and leave a comment below if you’d like to see any of these archived styles again… I’ve always loved and valued all your feedback.
