This year we are excited to bring you a monthly blog all about things to help you do better, be better and live better in 2020. From simple exercises, to delicious recipes, this month it’s all about getting back to basics so you can start the year as you mean to go on.
Top Tips; With so many people telling you to do so many different things to better your health it can often be confusing and overwhelming. Which is why we have chosen our top five, ‘doable’ health tips to help you live better in 2020.
1) It might be obvious but water, water and more water. Your body is made up of 60% water so making sure you’re hydrated is not only good for your skin but good for your entire system. We recommend filtered water and if you’re on the go using a bottle that filters for you like this one by Black and Blum which uses natural charcoal as it’s filter system, so you can carry clean water on the go without using any single-use plastic, what could be better than that?
2) Body brushing; It might seem like a chore to remember to body brush every day but once you get into the habit we guarantee you will stick at it. Use a dry body brush every morning before you shower to stimulate your lymphatic system which is particulary important if you’ve got a sedentary job. Not only does this get the blood flowing to reduce varicose and thread veins but it also keeps your system moving to rid it of toxins and to keep your skin super, super soft.
3) Just breathe; Breathing should be a obviously be a priority however, it’s not about how many breaths you take but how well you breathe. With so many techniques out there from the Wim Hoff method to the 7/11 breathing technique, it can be confusing just to work out ‘how you should be breathing’ so to make it simple, take 10 minutes out of your day to focus on your breathing, whether it’s at your chair. your desk or first thing when you wake up. Breathe in, breathe out, listen to your body and how you feel.
4) Yoga, yoga and more yoga we think you guessed we were going to say this one! It doesn’t mean you have to go to a class every day, it just means taking the principles of yoga into your daily life whilst wearing your ethical yoga clothes of course! Being calm, grounded, cool and collected but also making sure you give your body time to stretch, strengthen and relax after a busy day.
5) Good food = good mood. Good food can mean different things to different people but to us it means nutrient packed, locally grown, seasonal food. Not only is this better for the planet but it means your body maintains its natural, regular rhythm. It also means not limiting yourself, we believe a healthy diet is a balanced diet so if you want a brownie, eat a brownie, which brings us on to our recipe of the month.
Most recipes for January are all about salads and healthy eating so much so, we decided you need a treat, which is why these healthy, sea salt and sesame brownies by Madeleine Shaw are just what you need to help beat those January blues…
- 200g coconut oil or butter
- 200g good-quality dark chocolate (I love Ombar)
- 200g coconut sugar
- 1½ tsp vanilla extract
- 3 eggs, lightly beaten
- 200g gluten free or spelt flour
- Sea salt flakes, plus extra for topping
- 4 tbsp. of tahini
- 1 tbsp of sesame seeds
Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line a 25 x 25cm baking tin with baking paper.
Melt the coconut oil or butter with the chocolate in a pan on a low heat. Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly.
Beat the sugar, vanilla and eggs together until combined. Once the chocolate has cooled a little, pour it into the egg and sugar mix. Sift in the flour and a pinch of salt, stirring well then add in the tahini.
Pour the mix into the baking tin and scatter over some sea salt flakes (about ¼-½ tsp) and sesame seeds. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the brownie is just set – you want the outside to be crispy and the centre nice and gooey. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin. Once cool, cut into squares.
